Lyrics

Let it Go (I met the Buddha)

I met the Buddha in a downtown bar
He was sitting on a sofa by the fire
He smiled and nodded as I took a seat
While he continued to extinguish his desires

There was a tattoo of a cobra on his forearm
The firelight flickered in his glass of wine
We talked of women, baseball and the Middle East
But then he paused and his eyes began to shine

He said, so many things we think we know
While our suffering and joy they come and go
I felt his fingers brush across my sleeve
As he whispered to me softly, “let it go.”

After a while he stood and put his coat on
His eyes and smile were dancing in the light
I thanked him for his company and wisdom
We shook hands and then he walked into the night

So many things we think we know
While our suffering and joy they come and go
I felt his fingers reach into my heart
As he whispered to me softly, “let it go.”

Be still and find the beauty in your sorrows
All you think and see is but a grain of sand
There is no end and no beginning, only now
You are the flower unfolding in God’s hand

I walked home beneath the glow of street lights
A shooting star blazed up above unseen
There were a thousand cobras dancing in my heart
I’m neither here nor there, but always in between

So many things we think we know
While our suffering and joy they come and go
I felt his fingers reach into my soul
As he whispered to me softly, “let it go.”

Be still and find the beauty in your sorrows
All you think and see is but a grain of sand
There is no end and no beginning, only now
You are the flower unfolding in God’s hand.
